Connemara Original (40%)

Connemara is said to be the only Irish whiskey produced using peat smoke. It is also double-distilled, whereas triple distillation is typical for Irish whiskeys. Connemara is produced by the Kilbeggan Distillery, which I had the opportunity to visit during my own trip to Ireland in 2018. A 70 cl bottle cost €23.90 at SuperAlko in Latvia.

In the glass, Connemara appears light brown or golden-yellow. The nose immediately presents peat smoke, though fruity notes and caramel sweetness emerge in the background. The palate is relatively light; honeyed sweetness blends with the aroma of mild peat smoke. The smokiness is not overpowering but rather one element among others. Bourbon casks contribute a hint of vanilla, which becomes more noticeable with the addition of a small splash of water. The smoky aroma creeps back into the finish but remains quite subtle. Connemara Original Peated is an interesting and balanced whisky that captures much of what Ireland has to offer. It is a very solid purchase considering the price.
