Olde Hansa is a medieval restaurant in Tallinn’s Old Town. The restaurant also has a brewery and a production of schnapps. These are mainly served to the restaurant’s customers. Schnapps are also sold in some shops. Pepper schnapps is a type of drink with a long tradition in the Baltic countries. Almost every alcohol producer has its own version of the schnapps, flavored with various chilies or other peppers.
There is no more detailed information about the production, but it is probably made from rectified spirit produced by the Estonian Moe distillery. A 10 cl bottle was on sale for a special price of €7.90.
Pepper schnapps is light brown in the glass, pretty much like a whiskey. The aroma reveals a honey sweetness, with a slightly chili pepper-like aroma in the background. Soft and pleasant aroma. The taste is sharp and the chili pepper burn begins to be felt in the mouth immediately. They really have used chili and other spices properly. The afterburn continues in the mouth for a long time. There is also sweetness, probably comes honey, but it is overshadowed by the spiciness of the strong chili pepper.
Olde Hansa Pepper Schnapps is an excellent product, exactly what it promises. Close to a masterpiece in its own genre, I couldn’t ask for more from a drink like this. I could imagine that it would be a really great schnapps to accompany a fatty, meaty medieval dinner.
