Tallinn Distillery Applejack Cinnamon (38%)

Tallinn Distillery was a distillery in Tallinn, Estonia, that operated from 2018 to 2024. The company has now ceased operations and is in liquidation. The distillery produced various distillates using apple wine as a base. The distillery bought the apple wine from outside sources and focused solely on distillation and the sale of finished products.

Applejack Cinnamon is a distillate made from apple wine, distilled in a reflux still and  flavoured with cinnamon. According to the manufacturer, the distillate is particularly suitable for mixing with apple juice. A 20 cl bottle cost €8.50 when purchased directly from the distillery representative at a Christmas market.

The drink is slightly copper-coloured in the glass and runs very smoothly. Cinnamon is first noted in the aroma. The fruit distillate is present in the background, but quite softly, the alcohol vapours do not come across aggressively at all. Despite the 38% strength, the taste is somewhat sharp and burning. Cinnamon appears quickly in the initial taste and there is a pleasant sweetness, but the sharp burn of alcohol quickly cuts it off. The apple used as the raw material does not particularly stand out. The column distillation has probably taken away most of the typical aromas of fruit distillate, and cinnamon, as a fairly strong spice, covers the remaining more delicate aromas. However, the mouthfeel is full-bodied and a bit thick, perhaps softened with a little sugar.

When sipped neat, Cinnamon Applejack does not offer anything very amazing, but it is still a decent cinnamon-apple schnapps. However, when mixed with apple juice, it creates a tasty drink. The alcohol gives the mixture a solid body and the cinnamon flesh goes well with the apple juice. The availability of Tallinn Distillery products is probably very low at the moment. You may still find them at Tallinn’s Kaubamaja, where they were still available at least a year ago.
