Frankenstein Gin & Bitter (41.5%)

Frankenstein is an interesting experiment by the Lithuanian Vilniaus Degtine, combining gin and bitters in the same bottle. The drink contains 54% gin and 46% bitter. At the time of writing, the product has already been discontinued by the distillery, but it may still be available in Lithuanian stores. There is little information about the product itself, so I can’t tell about the raw materials and herbs used. A 70cl bottle cost €11.99 a few years ago.

The drink is slightly yellowish in the glass and somewhat thick, which means that added sugar has probably been used. The aroma is quite traditional gin-like, herbal and there is some threatening bitterness in the background. The taste is very soft and quite sweet at the beginning. There is some flavor, but it is not any herbal bomb. The taste is more of a spicy and slightly bitter feel and reminds of herbal liqueurs. Clove and nutmeg appear in the aftertaste. The juniper berry and other traditional gin aromas are not so much on offer, although they were noticeable in the smell.

Somehow the product resembles an herbal liqueur that has been distilled once more and sweetened with sugar. Due to its softness and sweetness, the drink is easy to sip as is and it is a decent schnapps. The product also works well in gin-based drinks, although its herbal content is a bit weak in them. A really nice product to buy at least once. Due to its affordable price, a recommended purchase if you happen to find it somewhere on your trip to Lithuania.
