Part of the international Amber Beverage Group, Amber Latvijas Balzams, which is also listed on the Latvian Stock Exchange, operates in Riga and is the largest alcohol producer in Latvia. In addition to the legendary Black Balsam, the company produces Stolisnaya and Moskovskaja vodkas for international distribution, as well as a range of spirits, liqueurs and sparkling wines for the Latvian market. Tropical, flavoured with pineapple, orange and other tropical fruits, is the latest version in the Riga Black Balsam product range. According to the manufacturer, the product combines the herbal bitters with the sweetness and mild acidity of fruits. The 30% liqueur is mainly available in Latvia and can be found in almost every grocery store across the country. A 20cl bottle cost €5.49 in Latvia.
The liqueur is very dark brown in colour and does not reveal that it contains tropical fruit juices. However, the smell has a fruity, sweet aroma of orange and especially pineapple. In the background, there is also a hint of the familiar bitter herbalism of Black Balsam. The mouthfeel is smooth and rather thick, but it is not a very sugary liqueur. The bitter nuances tend to stand out, but the sweetness and light acidity of the tropical fruits keep the bitterness well in control. The taste is very pleasant and comprehensive. The fruit juices are a perfect match for the bitter and herbal body. While the Cherry version of the same series was a bit of lame, Tropical is a really successful product. I really enjoy sipping it neat, I didn’t even think of trying the manufacturer’s recommended drink with tonic water and ice. An excellent product, the only thing that was disappointing was that I only bought a 20 cl bottle.
