Jas Hennessy & Co is the world’s largest cognac manufacturer, with a market share of approximately 40%. The Hennessy Cognac House was founded by Richard Hennessy in 1765. Today, Hennessy cognacs are produced by Moet Hennessy, which in turn is owned by Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessy’s parent company LVMH and Diageo. Hennessy cognacs are available from all alcohol stores around the world. In the Baltic countries, it is also naturally widely available in shops and restaurants. For many, it’s the “only and real” cognac. Hennessy VS is a blend of about 40 distillates of different ages from all regions of the province of Cognac. It has 9 g of added sugar per liter. A 35cl bottle costs about 15 € in Estonia.
The aroma is sweet and fruity. Oak, walnut, caramel and dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is thick and pleasantly oily. The taste is full-bodied and quite rich. Raisins, orange peel, nuts, oak, caramel and milk chocolate. The aftertaste is already drier and has a bit of tobacco and bitter oak nuances. Hennessy VS is a very pleasant and smooth cognac. The taste is full-bodied, sweeter than most other VS cognacs. The taste is not very complex, but basic and easy, as you would expect from a market leader. Hennessy VS is easy to sip neat and since it is not the cheapest in the market, I recommend it for sipping and rather use cheaper VS cognacs for cocktails if you prefer to use cognac for them. Good and high quality product and a good choice to enter the cognac world.
