Schuchmann is a winery in Georgia owned by the German businessman Burkhard Schuchmann. The Schuchmann estate encompasses 60 hectares of vineyards across three different regions in Georgia. In addition to a variety of wines, the company also distills chacha, a traditional Georgian grape spirit. Made from the byproducts of winemaking, the chacha is double-distilled and subsequently aged for six months in oak barrels. A 50 cl bottle cost €12.69 in Latvia.
In the glass, the spirit appears golden-yellow, with light sediment visible – likely particles derived from the oak barrels. The aroma is similar to grappa: notes of grape spirit, copper stills, fermented fruit, and a hint of raisin and plum. On the palate, it is rather smooth and surprisingly sweet. The oak aging may have imparted a sweetness, or perhaps the product has been slightly softened with brown sugar. It offers a noticeably smoother and fuller mouthfeel than the clear chacha made by the same producer. The flavor profile mirrors the aroma, featuring fermented grape juice, raisins, honey/caramel, and the tannins. The oak barrels have also contributed subtle notes of vanilla and toasted wood. Thanks to its smooth, slightly sweet character, it is easy to sip, though it remains sharper than typical brandy spirit. An interesting product that can also be recommended to whisky lovers.
