De Kuyper Grapefruit (15%)

De Kuyper, one of the world’s largest liqueur manufacturers, has a selection of over 20 different fruit and berry liqueurs. This blog has only reviewed one of them before (Sour Apple). Now it’s the turn of a grapefruit liqueur, which belongs to the cocktail liqueur series and has a very moderate alcohol strength of 15%. The manufacturer does not reveal the liqueur’s manufacturing process, but presumably it contains neutral alcohol, water, sugar (20g / 100ml) and concentrates and essences extracted or distilled from grapefruit juice, grapefruit peels and seeds. A 50 cl bottle cost €11.99.

The liqueur is supposedly made from blood grapefruit juice, which gives it a reddish-gray, slightly pink color. The smell has a citrus aroma and a slight hint of essence. The taste is soft, sour and at the same time sweet, like grapefruit itself. It reminds me of grapefruit juice with added sugar and alcohol. The acidity has a slight artificial note like citric acid, but otherwise the essence that is noticeable in the smell is not felt in the taste. The aftertaste has a slight bitterness similar to grapefruit seeds. The manufacturer has succeeded in capturing the sour-sweet aroma of grapefruit and the liqueur is an excellent product. As you can expect from a cocktail liqueur, it is very straightforward to drink neat. It is quite suitable for various mixed drinks and the aroma of grapefruit comes out strongly. The manufacturer recommends mixing it with vodka, gin or tequila in drinks. It gives a nice summery twist and a nice reddish color to gin & tonic, for example.
