Drambuie Whisky Liqueur (40%)

Drambuie is one of the best-known whisky liqueurs in the world. It’s a blend of aged whiskey, heather honey, spices and herbs. Legend says that the recipe dates as far as 1740, but the production was started in 1909. Malt whiskeys are said to come from Speyside and Highland areas. It’s produced in Edinburgh by a family owned company. In 2014 it was sold to William Grant & Sons.

There is a certain peppery aroma on the nose, cloves, orange peel and licorice. Mouthfeel is thick and it’s velvety and very sweet at the beginning. Then the whisky takes the power, wrapped with spices and herbs. At least clove, cinnamon, thyme and orange peel can be recognized. There’s plenty of spiced floral honey on it.

Even though it’s very sweet, there is a certain alcohol bite on it. Finish is sweet and herbal, with hints of malt whisky. It’s a very nice and high quality liqueur, but the sweetness level is so high that it’s difficult to sip more than max one shot. It’s much better on the rocks or on cocktails.
