Scottish Leader Blended Scotch Whisky (40%)

Scottish Leader is a fairly young player in the whiskey world, the brand was founded in 1976. It is produced by Burn Stewart Distillers, which is now owned by South African Distell, Africa’s largest alcohol producer. The company also owns few other Scottish distilleries; Bunnahabhain, Deanston and Ledaig.

According to Scottish Leader distillers, the product is intended to break familiar boundaries and bring new experiences. Despite the brand’s youth, it is sold quite widely, in more than 60 countries, and daily sales exceed 16,000 bottles. Instead of fiercely competing Western countries, Distell has decided to focus its marketing efforts on Eastern Europe and Asia. Scottish Leader is the best-selling Scotch whiskey in Taiwan. The price of a 20 cl bottle was € 4.99.

The aroma has oak, malt and grain. A little honey, smoke and spiciness. The taste is quite light, it has wood and grain, a little sweetness of honey. A hint of smoke or ash and fruit. A little bitterness of the orange peel. The aftertaste is spicy and slightly smoky. Light, young but quite well balanced blended whiskey. Light honey sweetness, but it’s not too sweet. The fine aroma of the smoke fits well into the bouquet. It’s not very complex and doesn’t offer anything special, but the price-quality ratio is pretty good here.
